Both of them had been waiting for the day since the time they knew how to spell ‘Homecoming’. There was a different spark in the flowers blooming around. Warm, vivid sense of affection and shyness could be seen in everyone’s faces.
Ron was really pumped up to ask Jessica, his high school crush. Today he put on the expensive cologne his dad had bought for special occasions, this was one hell of an occasion. Standing in front of the mirror he practiced asking Jessica to be his prom for maybe a thousand times. “Hey Jessica, would you like to go out to the dance with me?” “Hey Jessica, the dahlia to my flowers, would you like to go to the homecoming ball with me?” “Got some balls to go to the ball with this non-bald guy?” Shit. Shit. Shit.
Rachel , Ron’s chuddy buddy, wanted to ask Jake to the ball. Actually she wanted him to ask her out. But she was really bad at giving signals. So she decided to stumble upon him herself. She called up Ron and asked him how the boys had their things going and how she should approach him. He had no clue. Thus she got no clue.
Both of them stared into the similar figure in their own bathrooms mirrors before going to bed. And they both promised that tomorrow would be ‘the’ day. But 3 days had gone past and ‘the’ day never came.
Sitting back and sipping some juice at Ron’s backyard pool both of them were drowned in the ocean of sadness and misery. Ron never got the balls to speak up in front of Jessica and Rachel well, she could never have one.
Upon the mist of their juices, both of them poured their misery where Ron found a solution that if they both got rejected, they would go to the ball together. This way, no one would be alone and they’d rise their guts knowing that they have a backup.
The next day Ron woke up relieved without the blanket of pity covering his eyes. Rachel was a little scared because they had promised to do it that day. While breakfast, Ron’s heart grew a little lighter as he constantly saw Rachel and him going together to the prom with the corsage his mom gave him. So, he decided not to ask Jessica out.
In school Rachel was on her way to her class when she stumbled upon Jake checking upon his locker. She took a deep breath and walked up to Jake. After some mutual hellos, she finally opened her bottle and he happily filled his glass with her wine.
Ron on his way to school jumped across many banners where he saw Rachel and him showing their shiny teeth together, racing together, sharing a bottle of beer together and much more.
The day went normal and during recess Ron waited for Rachel at the corner where he usually met her. After a while he saw her coming towards her but there was a different charm in her face. As she moved closer she noticed she was biting another happiness between her lips. She hugged him tightly without uttering a word. He felt loose like a melting wax candle inside her warm tight hug. She told him everything and he congratulated her.
To avoid disappointing her, he lied that he too had asked Jessica out and he too had accepted his proposal and he was more than happy. Hearing this Rachel was really happy too.
And then at the day of the homecoming prom, Ron never went to the ball, and Rachel didn’t notice he hadn’t.
